“The International Women’s Day falls on March 8th. It is a holiday that celebrates women’s rights and women’s rights movements, bringing attention to gender equality. It inspired my thinking about Light Year ’95. The underlying theme of the International Women’s Day is the potential for liberation. However, in the context of global unrest and environmental contamination, I believe we no longer can demand liberation of a single group. Instead, we should investigate the complexities of cross-species and cross-cultural interdependence to envision new modes of co-liberation*.

For Light Year 95, I invited artists whose works celebrate hybrids, cyborgs and (re)mixes. Works that create space for networks of interpersonal care, cross community solidarity, and inter species (biological or technological) alliances. Works that highlight our interdependence. In other words, works that imagine co-liberation. My goal was to create space for those who historically have been ignored in the canon.

The artists included in the evening (with one exception) identify as women and/or non binary makers. The works offer a variety of perspectives, including from established and emerging artists, international and immigrant artists, and straight and LGBTQ artists. The invited artists represent diverse communities that are reflected in New York City. They include, among other, a queer documentary filmmaker from Russia who is awaiting her Green Card, a Chinese-Jamaican immigrant artist, and a Taiwanese artist who, after spending almost a decade in New York, is moving back to Taiwan during a tumultuous time for the country.”
