Show Ten: “Hierarchical Hegemonies”

Thursday, August 3rd , 2023 Dusk - 9:30 pm Jay Street and Water Street

Hierarchies are all around us – they dictate our daily interactions, personal and professional. They can help some get ahead while others are left behind. Some are visible – hierarchies in the workplace, gated neighborhoods, ivy league schools – while others are invisible and even more insidious. Hierarchies also exist in nature, from concepts like the food chain to the existence of organisms in an ecosystem, as well as mathematics. This exhibition seeks to explore these various hierarchies through a variety of visual techniques.

Utilizing myriad visual styles, ranging from documentary to computer-generated, this collection of works comments on these hierarchies and seeks to foster a dialogue with the viewer about a range of beliefs, many of which we simply take for granted. From exploring the dual hierarchies of man and nature and the dangers to taking a more mathematical approach to hierarchies by utilizing fractal geometry, these works present complex thematic concerns in visually diverse ways.
