Digital Fairy Tales Winter 2022-2023

December 28, 2022 - January 10, 2023

Weberstraße 109 53113 Bonn, Germany

The Digital Fairy Tales series uses folk tales collected by Franz Xaver von Scönwerth in the 19th century from the Oberpfalz area of Germany as its basis.  Following the Brothers Grimm, von Scönwerth was known as more of a purist and is well regarded for simply capturing the tales in their natural form, as opposed to manipulating them for mass publication.

Over 500 of these simple tales reside in an archive in Regensburg.  Erika Eichenseer, a teacher from the area, found the archive while researching innovative teaching techniques, and has been advocating for them since the mid 20th century.

The Digital Fairy series was conceived and initiated by the Leo Kuelbs Collection in 2015 and offers artists the opportunity to openly interact with selected works.  The results vary from1:1 retellings to more broad representations, all the way to new ideas inspired by those who imagined and expanded the stories all those years ago.  It’s a bridge through time—from the days of firelight and oral story-telling into the digital present and future.  Digital Fairy Tales is a means to create empathy and connect the spirit of imagination through time.
