LIGHT YEAR 13: THE BODY PREVAILS

Artists Tamas Veszi and Daniela Kostova are curating the 13th edition of the Light Year festival in Dumbo, Brooklyn. Situated in one of the most developed and contested urban spaces in NYC, this unique program presents a rare format for showcasing large-scale video in public space. The Manhattan Bridge becomes both a vehicle and structural element of the presentation as videos are projected directly onto the bridge’s surface.Its robust stone anchorage in close proximity to the limited viewing space transforms each work into its intimate self.

The selected artists’ use of the space surrounding their body addresses the definition of axis — an imaginary line about which a body rotates. The axis is disrupted within the content of the work but also in the urban environment. The bridge’s horizontal lines and the train tracks above the projection become distraction, as the passing trains overpower visual and mental attention. Extreme noise further distorts that scene. The viewers’ relief, once the train passes, enhances the viewing experience, but anxiety remains. We do not know when the next train will come. Which body prevails?

LIGHT YEAR is an ongoing project presented by 3_Search (Leo Kuelbs Collection, Glowing Bulbs and John Ensor Parker) in collaboration with the DUMBO Improvement District and NYC DOT. Originally created in celebration of the United Nations’ declaration of 2015 as the Year of Light and Light Art, LIGHT YEAR has hosted the work of over 100 artists and curators from around the world.
